Our Team
Meet the scientists and trainees driving discovery in the Herzog Lab.
Principal Investigator
Brett H. Herzog, MD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Herzog is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. His research focuses on the tumor microenvironment in thoracic malignancies and the development of novel immunotherapeutic strategies for lung cancer. He sees patients at Siteman Cancer Center and leads an active translational research program bridging basic science and early-phase clinical trials.
bherzog@wustl.eduLab Members
Peter
Lab Manager
Peter manages our mouse colony and ensures our teams orders and organization stays on point. He assists with all aspects of our experimental protocols. He enjoys traveling with his family and continues to play basketball at least once a week.
Onyi
MD/PhD Student
Onyi studies how cancer-associated fibroblasts impact T cell location and function in NSCLC. Outside of lab, I enjoy boxing, trying new restaurants, and going to concerts.
Abul
Senior Scientist
Abul's current research focuses on spatial tumor microenvironment profiling, stromal remodeling, and tumor–immune interactions in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC), with an emphasis on understanding how cancer-associated fibroblasts, extracellular matrix, and immune cells influence tumor progression and immunotherapy response. I integrate spatial transcriptomics, multiplex tissue imaging, multiomics, and immune profiling to identify clinically relevant biomarkers and targetable vulnerabilities. My recent work bridges spatial molecular profiling through Spatial Ecotypes with non-invasive liquid biopsy approaches through Liquid Ecotypes, connecting tissue-level tumor microenvironment organization with circulating molecular signatures. This integrated approach has the potential to capture tumor heterogeneity, improve disease monitoring, and identify biomarkers of therapeutic response and resistance, ultimately supporting more precise patient stratification and personalized cancer treatment. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, cooking, and long-distance drives. Whether exploring a new trail, experimenting in the kitchen, or heading toward a faraway destination, I’m always up for an adventure!
